The Christmas season is at once the most joyous time of the year and the most stressful time of the year. The harried pace of life is likely to not only stress you out, but stress your pet out as well. In addition, the changes that you make to your home, including setting up a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations, can throw your pet off a bit. The presence of holiday visitors, the new smells of pies and ham coming from the oven can all overstimulate your pet. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to make your pet feel special at Christmas.

One of the best ways to make your pet feel special at Christmas (or at any other time of the year) is to make sure that you are giving her enough attention. Make sure that fido or fluffy get enough petting, playtime and encouragement during the Christmas season just as they would during the rest of the year. If you have to put your pet away while you are having a party, for example, try to spend some extra time with her before and after the party, to let her know that she is loved.

Christmas gifts are just as appropriate for your pet as they are for your other loved ones. If your family hangs Christmas stockings, there is no reason that you can’t hang one for your pet as well. You should be able to find a variety of stockings at your local pet supplies store. you can then fill it with squeaky toys, catnip, or whatever kinds of items it is that your particular pet might enjoy. When you sit down to open up your family’s Christmas gifts, open up your pet’s gifts, as well. It might be that Fido would rather chew on the stocking than play with the squeaky ball, but that’s OK as well.

Whatever you do to make your pet feel special at Christmas, the most important thing is for you to demonstrate to your pet that you love and care for him. Words of praise and a little extra patience when your pet has an “accident” will go a long way during the Christmas season.
