How Can I Keep My Toddler Dressed When He Doesn’t Want To Be?
Toddlers are tough to keep dressed because they have learned to take off their clothes. And, this in itself is the problem. Since your toddler knows how to take off his clothes he wants to practice. He thinks it is quite fun to pull off his shirt and see how Mommy gets all worked up. Or, better yet take off all of his clothes and run around naked because this gets the best reaction of all! When at home, it’s not that big of a deal, but in public parents generally want their toddlers to behave and toddlers respond by not behaving at all. So, what can parents do to keep their toddlers dressed? There are a couple options.
Belts
If your child is constantly taking off his shorts, buy him a belt. Once you fasten the belt then loop the end of the belt over and under the back part of the belt to keep it even more secure. Your child may scream and have a meltdown, but they won’t be able to take their pants off. At least not for a couple more years. To keep shirts on the best suggestion is to buy a onesie because it fits under the body. If you put on a pair of shorts or jeans with a belt it’s impossible to take off either item! Problem solved, at least until your toddler figures it out.
Back Buttons
There are some outfits that button up the back. These are mostly one pieces or overalls, but they will work because your toddler can’t get his little hands back there to unbutton them and take them off!
Layers
Another option is to dress your child in layers so that as he takes one layer off he still has another underneath. This doesn’t make a lot of sense during the summer months, but if you have a big problem with your toddler staying dressed then you will want to try anything!
The best option to keeping your toddler dressed is to allow them time during the day to practice getting dressed and undressed. When you give them an hour during the day to take their clothes off and put them off, take them off and put them on, etc., they will quickly get the hang of it and the novelty will wear off. Of course, this is just a stage your child will eventually grow out of so be patient and understanding and don’t punish your toddler for taking off his clothes. Simply find appropriate times for him to do so.
