How Can I Get My Toddler To Adjust To Our New Infant?

Many parents find themselves not only worried about the baby on the way but also about how their toddler will adjust. Some parents wonder how they could love another human being as much as they love their first child and how they can learn to share their time between both children so everyone receives the attention they need. However, you shouldnt worry because plenty of families add new babies to their families all the time and manage to get along just fine. The following tips might help you make the adjustment, though!

Talk to the Toddler About Being a Sibling
The best thing you can do as soon as you find out you are pregnant is to tell your toddler. Telling your toddler first and making a big deal out of the fact that your toddler will be a big brother or sister is important. You want your toddler to feel as if he/she is taking on a new role and a role that is very important. Buy a big brother/big sister t shirt and talk to your toddler about the new baby all the time.

You may want to ask your toddler for suggestions regarding names and nursery themes. If you want your toddler to feel involved and to reduce the risk of hurt feelings then come up with two colors you and your spouse like for the nursery then let your toddler pick the best one. The same goes for names. Pick two names and ask your toddler which one is the best one for the baby. If your toddler feels he/she is involved in the decision process then he/she will feel closer to the baby on the way and anxiously await its arrival.

Big Boy/Girl Room
As you are preparing for the baby make sure you share the excitement with your toddler. Consider preparing a big boy/girl room and allowing your toddler to help. He/she is no longer a baby and can really make the transition if you help by talking about being a big brother/sister.

Help With Baby
Once the baby arrives include your toddler. Allow your toddler to hold the baby, with supervision, pick out his clothes, assist with diapering and bathing, and anything else you can imagine.

If you use these tips then your toddler should have no problem adjusting to the new baby. Of course, try not to change any particular special activities you have with your toddler and focus on giving him/her as much attention as always. Its not easy, but you can do it!
