How Can I Ease & Stop My Toddlers Constipation?

Toddlers often have irregular bowel movements. Some child may have a bowel movement after each meal; others will have as many as two days in between bowel movements. Still, constipation can happen, even for toddlers. When it does, there are things that you can do to ease & stop your toddler’s constipation.

The signs of constipation in your toddler can be varied. She might experience bowel movements are less frequent than what is normal for her. She might be having uncomfortable bowel movements. Her stools may be hard and dry. Sometimes, liquid feces will leak out and soil her underwear.

Several things can cause your toddler’s constipation. For example, he might be eating too much food that is low in fiber, such as milk products or peanut butter. He might be experiencing stress because of potty training. He might be experiencing dehydration.
A lack of physical activity can also be responsible for your toddlers constipation.

There are a variety of things that you can do to ease & stop your toddler’s constipation. You can immediately increase her intake of fiber. You should also avoid giving her foods that tend to cause constipation, such as dairy products or bananas. Make sure that she is not becoming dehydrated by keeping up on the amount of fluids that she is getting. You should encourage her to be involved in some sort of physical activity. To relieve pain, you can also massage her belly, just below the navel. Apply constant and gentle pressure for three minutes around 2 inches below her navel.

If all else fails, you should talk to your health care provider about options for stopping and easing your toddlers constipation. Often, your health care provider may recommend a stool softener, mineral oil, laxatives, or enemas. It is generally not recommended that you use these products unless they are specifically recommended for your toddler by a health care provider.
