Homeschooling A Gifted Child
Many times the public school system focuses on the average student and those that are truly gifted or the ones that are truly learning disabled get left out. Because of this many parents of gifted children choose to homeschool. This ensures their child is challenged and really works up to her potential rather than being bored in a classroom that does not challenge her intellect.
One benefit to homeschooling a gifted child is that you spend the day teaching your child and challenging her at her level. Many times parents of gifted kids send their children to school, but in the evenings devote hours to providing a more challenging education to their child in order to keep her thinking and challenging herself. Many families realize they will actually have more time for extracurricular and family activities by homeschooling the gifted child. The long school day that does not benefit the child is eliminated and the hours spent homeschooling in the day are challenging and enriching. That leaves the afternoons and evenings for fun activities and family time. Many families find homeschooling their gifted child a relief after public school.
Another benefit is that each subject is taught at the gifted childs level. Most gifted children excel in one or two subjects, but then are on a normal level with other subjects or may even have weaknesses with them. One example is a child gifted in math who is three years ahead of her peers. She sits in class bored and is not challenged. Then, the same child may be a year behind in reading and struggle to catch up with the class. This can leave the gifted child feeling confused and not knowing how to handle class. However, homeschool can challenge her math abilities, focus on her weak reading abilities, and enrich her learning environment so that she may really excel.
Additionally, gifted children can be challenged further through extracurricular activities and social engagements that really challenge them. Field trips can be arranged to supplement what the gifted child learns in class and these field trips arent limited by time, school days, or anything else. Parents can really educate their gifted children in the way they see fit and many times the gifted child excels because of it.
