Holding Your Infant Safely

One of the most exciting experience a new mom or dad can have is holding their newborn for the very first time. This can also be one of the most frightening times, as many people can become extremely anxious or nervous when holding their little one. However, there are a few tips that can help you be more comfortable when the time comes, as well as help you know how to safely hold your baby.

The first thing to know is that, the more confident you are in holding your baby, the more comfortable that both you and your baby will be. Also, it can help both of you for you to talk to your baby while you hold her, to soothe both her and you. No matter what type of hold you are using, make sure to firmly support the baby’s head and neck. Top-heavy newborns need the most neck and head support.

The first type of carrying that you will use is called the “cradle” carry. For the cradle carry, you will essentially cradle the baby in on of your arms, being certain that her neck is supported firmly. This works for a while, until she is too big to fit into just one arm. This position can work well for bottle feeding or for breast feeding..

You can also carry baby on your shoulder. The baby’s head can rest on your shoulder, and you should use the hand that is not holding her to keep the head from bobbling around, at least until she is able to do it herself. This is a good position for burping, rocking, or trying to get baby to go to sleep. This can be one of the most comfortable positions for your baby.

Once your baby is able to keep her head and neck under control, you can carry her on your hip. This leaves one of your arms free to do other things. Be careful when bending down, and make sure you have a firm grip on the baby.
