Helping Your Struggling First Grader
It can be difficult to watch a child struggle with school. As a parent, you want to be helping your struggling student. In some cases, though, you may not know exactly where it is to start helping your struggling student. Helping your struggling student is especially important in the first grade. Because so many foundational skills are learned in first grade, helping your struggling first grader will help her to not only do well while she is a first grader, but also all through her entire school years.
The first thing that you can do to help your struggling first grader is to watch out for any number of problems that might be causing your first grader to struggle. For example, conditions such as ADHD can absolutely impact the way that a first grader learns. More severe conditions, such as Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, or various forms of Learning Disabilities can impact the student even more. If you are concerned that your struggling first grader may have one of these conditions, the best way to help her is to obtain treatment for these conditions.
The next thing to keep in mind when helping your struggling first grader is to not give up. Your struggling first grader is probably even more frustrated than you are that he just can’t seem to keep up with the rest of the class. Your struggling first grader needs your patience and your understanding if he is ever going to be able to make it. Be patient with him, and be patient with whatever process or methods it is that you use to help him.
Another key component to helping your struggling first grader is your relationship with the first grade teacher. Teachers very often will have a different perspective on why a child is struggling. For example, you might talk to your struggling first grade who says that he is struggling because the classroom material is just too hard. The first grade teacher might, however, think that your first grader is struggling because he is spending too much time talking to his neighbor, for example. Keeping the lines of communication between school and home is an important key to helping your struggling first grader.
