Halloween Activities and Crafts for Kids

Halloween is looked forward to by both the young and young at heart. Dressing up in costume and trick-or-treating doesn’t have to be all the fun! Whether you are planning a spooky Halloween party or just preparing for the ghoulish night, activities and crafts are great tools to get in the mood and decorate.

Spooky Bat Wreath
Materials needed:

-cardboard (empty cereal boxes work great!)
-black construction paper
-scissors
-glue
-small paper plate
-large paper plate
-3 in of black yarn

To begin:

Trace a small paper plate inside of the larger paper plate on the cardboard to make the base of the wreath. Cut 1 ½ by 4 inch strips of construction paper. The amount of construction paper needed depends on the size of the base. Glue the strips into rolls as if making a paper chain and glue the rolls onto the base. Use your imagination to make any design you like! Fold a piece of construction paper in half and draw ½ of a bat shape to make both sides symmetrical. Use a white crayon or colored pencil to draw facial features on the bat. Glue the bat to the bottom of the string and attach to the wreath from the backside so that it hangs in the middle. Now attach the wreath to a door or wall for an eerie greeting!

Coat Hanger Ghosts

Materials needed:

-white coat hangers
-white knee highs or nylon panty hose
-string (black)
-felt tip pen

To begin:

While holding hanger hook, grab bottom center of hanger and pull to form diamond shape. Pull knee high or leg cut from panty hose over entire hanger from bottom to top. Grab leg opening at base of hook and tie with string. Draw big eyes underneath hook with felt tip pen. Hang inside from ceiling or outside in trees.

Easy Eerie Jack-O-Lantern Jar

Materials needed:

-glass jar (The bigger and fatter, the better. Pickle jars work the best)
-orange poster paint
-black electrical tape
-votive candle

To begin:

Clean jar well. Paint outside of jar with orange poster paint. Use black electrical tape to make eyes and other features. Place votive candle in jar. Set on window sill and enjoy without the mess of carving a pumpkin!

Grotesque Mystery Bags

Materials needed:

-4 dark colored bags (paper bags can be used for items that aren’t cooked)
-macaroni(cooked)
-cotton
-artificial nails
-rice(cooked)

To begin:

Put each item in an individual bag. Label the bag with macaroni, “intestines.” Label the bag with cotton, “cobwebs.” Label the bag with artificial nails, “toenails.” Label the back with rice, “maggots.” Let the children feel inside each bag for a frightening experience!
