Essential School Supplies for Second Grade

There are certain essential school supplies that your child will need for second grade. While some of the specific items that your child needs may vary from one school to the next, or from one teacher to the next, the fact of the matter is that there are some school supplies that your child is definitely going to need for second grade.

The first thing that your child needs is a backpack. Very often, your second grader will have a backpack left over from first grade that she can use. However, if her first grade backpack has a cartoon figure or any specific type of a character design, be prepared for the fact that your child might not want to use it again. She may feel like she has grown too old for that old “baby” backpack. Given this scenario, the best thing that a parent can do for a backpack is often to purchase a backpack for the child that is in a single color, perhaps even the child’s favorite color. You may also consider purchasing a backpack that has wheels, although some schools may have specific rules or preferences that indicate that backpacks with wheels are to be avoided.

Writing instruments and art supplies are also essential school supplies for second grade, just as they were in first grade. Paper, pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, scissors, and glue are all a part of a second grader’s toolbox. While your child may not need to have all of these items at school, it is essential that these items be available at home. In addition, some schools use a folder system, using folders with pockets in them, to send notes between home and school. In other places, the school may use a planner that the child needs to bring back and forth to school.

Some teachers may ask that your child should provide a variety of classroom supplies, as well. It is not uncommon for parents to be asked to bring in things like hand sanitizer, napkins, tissues, and paper towels.

Certainly, there are other sorts of school supplies that your child may be able to use in first grade. Many schools will publish a list of supplies that students will need for a given teacher. Even before you have this list, however, the things above should get you a good start, and should provide the bare essentials for the school year.
