Do I Have To Keep Records Of Everything Done In Homeschool?

Many parents wonder about the rules and regulations regarding homeschooling in their state. One of the most frequent questions is whether or not records should be kept of everything that occurs in the homeschool. Very few states require this type of record keeping; however it truly is essential to keep this information for your childs sake. There are several reasons why and all of them will ultimately benefit your child.

First of all, if your child must return to a traditional school for whatever reason you will need all of your records so school personnel may decide what credits your child receives and what grade he is in. Frequently homeschoolers progress at their own rate rather than in a particular grade. This makes it difficult to determine the childs grade and age alone wont cut it. So, all of the records you have kept can be evaluated and used to determine what level your child is own.

The same goes for when your child applies for college. If you have all of the records for your child then you can easily prove what your child learned and what he did not. If you dont have records for everything then when you need to prove something you wont be able to. This can be very frustrating so just do yourself a favor and keep impeccable records.

Also, you should always keep a copy of your childs records in a safety deposit box or in another safe location. The reason why is in case of a fire or some other natural disaster. If the information is lost and you have no backup copy you will find it difficult to recreate the records.

It may seem like a complete pain, but keeping records of absolutely everything that takes place regarding your childs education is very important. Some parents and children will never need this information, but some will, so it is worth having it. You will save yourself many headaches by keeping up with the information all along. It really wont take you that much extra time at the end of every day to record the days activities and it might really come in handy one day. So, even if the state does not require that you keep records of everything done in homeschool you should do it anyway. It is really the best way to have peace of mind and know that you can prove all of your childs accomplishments at homeschool.
