Do Babies Hear What We Hear?
New parents want to know everything there is to know about their newborns. And, one of the most common questions is how well newborn babies can hear. While there are many questions about newborns development that have not been answered yet the one about hearing has. Babies at birth have almost perfect hearing, which means they can pretty much hear everything an adult can.
Of course, babies are not accustomed to some of the noises outside of their mothers belly and may be frequently startled. They will also find comfort in sounds that they heard in utero whether it is a favorite song, their mothers voice, or sounds like vacuum cleaners that mimic the sounds of the womb. Babies hear very well from birth and begin forming the tools for language early on. Of course, your baby wont be able to talk for a while yet. But, as you are talking to him he is putting the pieces of the language puzzle together and it wont be too long before your baby says his first word. After that, you may find it difficult to get your baby to be quiet for a few minutes!
If your child does not respond to noises as an infant then this is cause for concern. The reason why is infants as young as a day old should startle at loud noises and turn their heads to better hear their mothers voice. If this does not occur during the first few days of life then it should be discussed with your childs pediatrician. A simple hearing test can determine if your infants hearing is normal or not. If all is not well then the sooner treatment can be started the better off your infant will be. Sometimes hearing aids are the answer, other times surgery, and still others time is all that is needed. If your child is not reacting to sounds within the first week of life then an hearing evaluation is necessary.
Most babies hearing is checked at the hospital in the day or two following birth and the results are given to the mother. If all is well the baby passes the hearing exam and is considered to have normal hearing. If not, then the doctors will know there is something to investigate further to find out the problem.
