Dealing with Heartburn During Pregnancy

Heartburn is never a good thing. The bad news for the pregnant woman is that, at some point or another during the pregnancy, she’s likely to have at least a little bit of heartburn.

The changes that happen to a woman’s body during pregnancy are both drastic and dramatic. First of all, there are extensive hormonal changes going on inside your body. On top of that, your insides are being all smushed together, causing crowding as your baby grows.

What makes heartburn during pregnancy especially frustrating is the fact that you can’t just take any old heartburn medication to deal with it. Many of the medications, both over the counter and prescription, just haven’t extensively been tested for pregnant women. Add to that the fact that many of these medications may have unacceptable side effects, and you can feel really trapped.

Fortunately, there are things you can do. If you want to deal with your heartburn during pregnancy, the best approach is to deal with it naturally. You can start by trying to avoid heartburn. That means you need to hold off on foods that are high in acid, such as tomatoes or juices. You’ll want to avoid both spicy and fatty foods, as they tend to lead to heartburn, as well. Caffeine is another well known culprit for causing heartburn.

You might also try eating several small snacks during the day rather than three larger meals. This helps your belly from getting too full, which is a common cause of heartburn.

There are herbal remedies to consider, too. Herbal teas in a number of varieties, including spearmint, orange peel, chamomile, and marshmallow root are all thought to help quell stomach acid. If tea is not your thing, you can get a herbal supplement with some of these ingredients, too.

Heartburn during pregnancy is common, but it’s not something you just have to accept. Try some of these methods, and you may find that your pregnancy heartburn is minimized, even if it doesn’t go away altogether.
