Could My Anxiety Issues Be Caused By My PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS for short, can be an extremely frustrating condition. It can affect a variety of areas of a woman’s life, and its symptoms can be extremely nerve-wracking. In a variety of ways, there may be at least, a peripheral link between anxiety and PCOS.

The hormonal chances caused by PCOS could possibly be a cause of anxiety and depression. The elevated levels of androgens, such as testosterone could very likely affect a woman’s mood, and make her more anxious and/or more depressed. In addition, the insulin resistance that many women with PCOS develop is also thought to be the possible cause of anxiety, and anxiety is common with many people who have diabetes as well. However, more research on these points are necessary, and studies to this point have not been entirely conclusive.

One connection between PCOS and anxiety is the specific symptoms of PCOS. Certainly, the frustration that comes with the symptoms of PCOS could cause anxiety. When PCOS leads to a series of multiple miscarriages, for example, a woman is more likely to experience anxiety. Certainly, the frustration of a woman who has PCOS and is trying to conceive can be pronounced, as well. For these women, fertility treatments may help them not only to become pregnant, but to overcome their anxiety as well.

Other symptoms of PCOS, such as weight gain, skin changes, and hair loss or unwanted hair growth, could be responsible for anxiety. These symptoms affect the way that a woman sees herself, and can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety. In this case, there are a variety of things that a woman can do to address her self-esteem issues, as well as the specific symptoms of PCOS that are causing them.

In some instances, women with PCOS who experience anxiety may be proscribed anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medications. In some cases, women who are given the birth control pill to control the other symptoms of PCOS may find that the pill helps to restore a hormonal balance which in turn reduces anxiety. In addition, many women with PCOS have experienced a great deal of success with stress management and anxiety reduction techniques.
