Comparing Homeschool & Public School Curriculums

When it comes to curriculums in homeschool and public school they may be very similar or drastically different. This really depends on the state where the homeschool is and the parent who is teaching. Some homeschool parents choose to teach a religious based curriculum and others choose to teach a curriculum based on the public school system. Still other parents choose a different style of curriculum altogether. The most important thing is that homeschool curriculums can be designed specifically to match the learning speed and style of the student while public school curriculums are designed for the masses.

Homeschool Curriculums
Many homeschool students benefit significantly from their homeschool curriculum because each subject is matched to them. So, if a homeschool student is really advanced in science but falling behind in reading the classes may be tailored to focus on advanced science classes and a reading class that works at their level and helps them learn. This means that a 7th grade homeschooler may be learning one subject at the 10th grade level and another subject at the 5th grade level. But what is important is that the child is learning and accomplishing goals one step at a time. It is easier for a student to really learn in a homeschool environment because they cant simply coast through even if they dont understand the material.

Public School Curriculums
Public School curriculums are designed for the masses. That is to say that when a child enters a certain grade he should be on par with all the other students in the class for all the subjects in that particular grade. Many students defend themselves in this environment although it may be difficult. But, many students also are bored because the material is not challenging enough and other students fall behind because the material is too challenging. This results in an uneven education and kids who never truly learn certain concepts.

Public school must function the way it does with certain standards for each grade. However, there could be some leniency in classes and kids could be on one grade level for some subjects and a different grade level for others. This would make graduating with a certain class more difficult, but it would enforce learning which is most important.

As you can see there are some major differences in homeschool curriculums and public school curriculums. You must choose what is best for your child all around, but remember that if you homeschool you will be able to focus your childs learning on his exact level, not above or below, and he will always be challenged and learning and his actual grade level will not be as important.
