Coming to Terms with Putting Your Child in Daycare

No parent likes to have to leave their child in the care of another for a very long time. This is especially true for the parent who has come to the place where circumstances have left them little choice but to use daycare. Still, there are some basic realities that you have to come to terms with. They include:

- You may want and/or need to work.

- The daycare provider may be with your child more than you are, at least in terms of waking hours.

- Your child may come to care for and love the caregiver.

- The search for a daycare provider can take a lot of time and emotional energy.

- Even the best child care provider will not do everything in the same exact way that you would do it or you would like to do it.

- The job that you are trying to fill is extremely important and difficult. The child care provider should have your respect.

The process of finding child are and putting your child into a childcare situation can be scary. You will be giving up some of the direct influence that you have on your child. You will be trusting his care and well-being to another person. You might struggle with guilt or anger, and you may feel like you are abandoning your little one. These feelings are completely normal; but they are also, largely, unfounded.

One of the best ways that you can cope with these feelings is to make sure that you choose the right daycare arrangement for your child. Know ahead of time what you expect from a childcare provider, and don’t settle for a provider that doesn’t meet your expectations. Discuss your feelings with your spouse or with a family member or friend. In the end, you are doing what must be done, and your child will be all right. Millions of children have been placed in daycare and other child care arrangements, and have come out of it just fine.
