Causes for an Irregular Menstrual Cycle

There are many causes for irregular menstrual cycles; some of them are a reason to be worried while others are completely normal given your circumstances. When you first start your period you may find that you do not have regular cycles at all, and this is completely normal as your hormones are fluctuating. Women that are going through menopause may also find that their cycles are very irregular, and again this is usually not something to be worried about and is generally associated with a fluctuation in hormones. Women who are of child bearing ages will generally see a pattern develop and will begin to expect their menstrual cycle at about the same time every month, give or take a day or two.

If your periods have become irregular or have been irregular for some time despite your age and what should be a very typical time to have regular cycles you there may be some things that you could consider as the cause. Some of the most common causes of an irregular period are stress and a change in diet. The body is all about self preservation, and when you are stressed or have made a major change in the diet your body will preserve its energy and your menstrual cycle takes energy. When the stress passes or your diet balances out your menstrual cycle will likely become more regular again.

Some other causes of an irregular menstrual cycle may be per menopause, weight gain, weight loss, vegetarian diet, pelvic inflammation, uterine polyps, early miscarriage, fibroids, uterine cancer, and other uterine abnormalities. If you can rule out stress and a change in diet you may want to check with your doctor to be sure that you dont have something more serious going on. Chances are your body is just a bit off and things will return to normal soon enough. If in doubt, you should always double check with your doctor just to be sure that there isnt something to be worried about.

Its important to note that a month or two where your period is a bit irregular probably isnt something to worry about. If you have three or four months at a time where things just arent right that is when you may want to consider talking to your doctor. We all have times where our period comes a bit late, a bit early, not at all, or is heavier or lighter than usual. The menstrual cycle is not exactly the same every month, and sometimes the variations will just be a bit more noticeable than usual. An irregular menstrual cycle in and of itself is not something to worry about, but if it becomes the rule rather than the exception, its time to get it checked out.
