Can I keep exercising during the first trimester?

You can not only keep exercising during the first trimester but you should continue doing so throughout your pregnancy. It was once believed that exercising during pregnancy was not healthy and could even cause problems for the woman and baby. Additionally, doctors recommended that pregnant women take it easy and never overexert themselves. And, while this is still important to a degree, you should continue exercising to keep in shape.

During the first trimester you can do almost all sports and exercises as long as there is no risk of a hard fall or major contact. Contact sports and skiing are definitely out. As your pregnancy continues there are other sports that you should stop playing as well like cycling or running, but there are always plenty of safe exercises to engage in.

Remember you should always drink plenty of water while exercising and never let your heart rate get too fast. As long as you are conscious of those two things then you should be able to exercise safely while pregnant.

Another tip is to always listen to your body. Even if you are accustomed to running five miles per day you may not physically be able to do so while you are pregnant. So, always listen to your body and if you feel it is too much simply slow down. As long as you are working out and exercising then you are doing your body good so dont worry about doing as much as you used to. Your body is already working really hard being pregnant and you dont want to take it too far.

Always keep in mind your body temperature as well. You do not want to get too hot while exercising because doing so could negatively impact your baby. So, keep your temperature at a normal level and avoid excessive sweating.

Dont overstretch either. A hormone called relaxin is produced during pregnancy which makes your muscles looser than normal. So, when you are stretching too much you could over stretch your muscles and actually injure yourselves.

If you are worried about your exercise program during pregnancy then you should speak with your OB/GYN to ensure that you are doing is ok and acceptable. As long as you always are exercising at a low intensity, drinking pretty of water, and not overheating then you should probably be ok during your exercise routine.
