Buying a Car Seat - New or Used?

If you are having a baby then you will need to buy a car seat. However, you might be wondering whether you should buy a used or a new car seat. If there is any way around avoiding a used car seat then you should do so. When you buy a new car seat you know that it has never been in a wreck, has not been recalled, and is up to date regarding safety regulations. When you buy a used car seat you simply take a previous owners word for the safety of the seat and whether it was ever in an accident. When it comes to your childs safety then you should always buy a new car seat. The following reasons why might also help you understand why it is a good idea.

Safety Standards
Safety standards change on a regular basis and if you buy a new car seat then you know for 100% that the new seat meets all current safety standards and that it is the safest option for your child. However, if you buy a used car seat you may not know exactly when it was manufactured and whether or not it meets current safety standards. You dont want to take the safety of your child and risk it for a used car seat. So, just dont do it.

Register
You can register a new car seat. This means once you buy it you fill out the customer form and mail it in. Then in the event there is a recall the manufacturer of your infants car seat can get in touch with you. If you buy a used car seat you do not have this option and the car seat may be recalled because it is not safe or poses some other hazard to your child, but since it was used you will never know about it. Simply avoid this risk and buy a new car seat.

No Accidents
And, as discussed before, when you buy a new car seat you know it has never been in an accident. This is very important because any car seat that has ever been in an accident should no longer be used. If you buy a used car seat at a yard sale or online you have no way of knowing why the car seat is being sold and if it was ever in a wreck or not. Dont put your child at risk just to save a few dollars. If you must save money, try buying used clothing or used toys, but always buy a new car seat.
