Benefits of Childhood Vaccinations

Vaccinations have become mandatory in all 50 states and children cannot attend daycare, preschool, or public school until they have received the necessary shots. Some children may qualify for exemptions based on medical conditions, religious beliefs, or philosophical beliefs. All others must be immunized. While there are some side effects associated with vaccines, there are also some befits.

Immunity

Children who receive all of the recommended vaccinations usually develop immunity to the diseases they were vaccinated for. Boosters are necessary to keep a child’s immunity up and for it to last longer. Vaccinations do not protect 100% against diseases, however they do usually help a child fight the disease off faster or have a milder case than if they had not been immunized.

Community Protection

Mandatory immunizations create something called community immunity. When most people are immunized it protects those who cannot be immunized because of a medical condition, age, or some other reason.

Low Risk

Most vaccines have a low risk of side effects. Some children may experience an adverse reaction, but the vast majority of children will not. This is a benefit of vaccines because most children can receive them with no problems.

Before your vaccinate your child, however, you will also want to evaluate the risks. Many times parents realize that the risks of vaccination outweighs the benefits for their child. Other parents have philosophical or religious beliefs that prevent them from vaccinating their child. There are always benefits and risks for anything you may choose to do. It is important to educate yourself and make an informed decision for your child based on the information available. Remember, too, that many doctors are not very knowledgeable of vaccines. They simply follow the schedule provided and don’t do much more research than that. If you are interested in delaying shots or foregoing them altogether you will need to find a pediatrician who will support you in your decision.
