Being A Stay-At-Home Mom - Can It Work For You?

More and more, families are beginning to see the benefits of having one parent or another working full-time in the home. Being a stay-at-home mom (or even a stay-at-home-dad) can be an extremely rewarding career. Both you and your family will benefit tremendously from you being able to stay at home. However, there are specific challenges that face the stay-at-home parent, and there are specific things that the family who wishes to have a stay-at-home parent must accept.

The transition from working a regular job to becoming a full-time stay-at-home mom can be a bumpy one. To ease the transition, it is important to be prepared. Reading up on child development and infant care can only make you more comfortable with your new responsibilities. You will also want to talk to others who have made the same transition, to learn about their difficulties as well as their successes. Develop a strong network of social contacts of other moms in your area, or join an organized stay-at-home moms’ group. By doing these things, you will make sure that your days are not only filled with dirty diapers, but they are filled with intellectual challenges and with adult social interactions.

One of the biggest challenges of being a stay-at-home mom is the financial situation. The loss of income will have a drastic impact on the life of your family. Learning virtues like sacrifice, simplicity, and gratitude will help make this easier. It may also help you to become less tied to materialistic things, which is generally healthy.

In addition, many stay-at-home moms find that they have the time and the desire to start a home-based business. You might decide to start selling a product such as Avon or The Pampered Chef to help supplement your income. You might start selling second-hand items on eBay. You might decide that it is time to write that novel you’ve been thinking about - after all, at 300 words a day, you can finish a novel in one year!

With the right amount of preparation and a realistic approach to finances, being a stay-at-home mom just might work for you.
