Art & Craft Ideas for Kindergarteners on Rainy Days

You have a full class of kindergarteners who are full of energy and raring to go. However there is no place to go when it is raining outside and the kids are going stir crazy. What can you possibly do to calm them down? Are there any good options to keep them busy and occupied even though it is pouring down rain outside? The answer is yes! There are lots of art and craft ideas for kindergarteners on rainy days. The following ideas will help you plan some activities for rainy days and may even inspire you to come up with your own take on some of the art and craft ideas!

Spiral Snake
This craft is really easy and only requires green construction paper, scissors, a pen, and googly eyes if you have them. Otherwise, eyes can be colored on!

First, have your kindergarteners draw a spiral on a green piece of construction paper. You might consider drawing a spiral on the board to give them an example of how to do it. Then help each child who seems to need it. Remember that the middle of the spiral will be the snakes head so make that part more of an oval shape and continue with the rest of the spiral shape. Once finished have your students cut along the spiral lines. The form of the snake will immediately be visible! Then, have the kids decorate the face and glue on googly eyes or draw on eyes. A little piece of red construction paper may be used to create a tongue if you want, but you dont have to do that step if you dont want.

Then, students may choose to decorate their snake with crayons and markers to make him look even more snakelike or leave him green. Have enough long pieces of string cut out for each student that may be glued or taped to the snake and then hung from the ceiling.

Egg carton Tulips

What is more beautiful than a bouquet of flowers on a rainy day to help you appreciate sunny weather? Not very much and this egg carton tulip craft idea is a lot of fun and will really keep your students engaged.

You will need egg cartons and pipe cleaners. The best egg cartons are the Styrofoam ones and not the cardboard ones. You can also use real egg shells, but these may be too delicate for kindergarteners. Once you cut the egg portion of the carton out you will need to have your class paint them. You can use tempura paint or markers, depending on whats available. Have your class paint the egg shells different colors.

Once finished they will need to fold green pipe cleaners into a small spiral shape at one end. After this the spiral shaped end of the pipe cleaner will be glued to the egg shell. Have each student create two or three or more tulips! Hot glue is great to work with, but your students may use white glue. If this is the case the flowers need to set for several hours.

These are just a couple craft ideas that can take up some time and really keep kids motivated during a rainy day!
