Are There Prescription Medications That Will Help With Colic?

As a new parent you probably have visions of a cute little baby that smiles and babbles at you all the time. However, about 25% of parents find out that their visions of parenthood are filled with inconsolable crying rather than the sweet little baby they had imagined. These babies suffer from colic and there is no real determination as to what causes the disorder. There are a lot of remedies out there for colic and some of them work while others do not. Finding the one that works for your infant, if there is one, might be a frustrating battle in and of itself. It is during these times that parents often ask if there are prescription medications that will help colic.

The answer is there are anti-spasmodics and sedatives that could possibly be prescribed for colic, however it is a really, really bad idea to treat your infant with these types of drugs. First of all, they dont cure the colic and they may be very dangerous for your baby to take. So, find other ways to deal with the screaming and crying of your colicky baby that does not involve these potentially dangerous prescription drugs.

Colic is not a disease. Babies who are completely healthy and normal have colic sometimes and there is no way to console the baby. Since colic is not an illness or a disease prescription drugs should not be given. Instead, parents should try herbal or homeopathic remedies, massage, gripe water, keeping their babies in constant movement, or any other remedy they find helpful. Not all colicky babies are the same so what works for one may not work for another. However, there are a lot of different remedies that may be tried to relieve the colic symptoms.

The most important thing to keep in mind if you have a colicky baby is that your baby is not sick and you are not to blame. Some babies just get colic and it is more than likely due to their immature nervous and digestive symptoms. If you can just find ways to cope until your baby is three or four months old then you will probably be in the clear and colic will be over. If you ever feel angry at your baby or like you dont have control then you need a break. Put your baby in his crib for five minutes and take a break or else call a friend to take a shift. Colicky babies are hard to deal with, but they do get better and those dreams of a cute and happy baby will eventually come true.
