Accidents During Labor

It’s not exactly a comfortable thing to think about, going into labor. You know that you’re going to be exposed, for all of the world to see. Your body is going to be put on display, as it were, during the whole process, and that’s just unnerving. You can mitigate some of these concerns with a good birth plan, but the fact of the matter is that labor and delivery are an intensely personal experience that is going to be shared with many people.

This can lead to quite a bit of embarrassment and apprehension. You don’t want to be on display. In addition to the idea of being on display, however, there are other concerns. For example, you’re likely to be embarrassed in a number of other ways. It’s likely that you’re going to have some accidents when you’re in labor. You need to come to terms with that fact now, before you get into labor. You are very likely to pee and poop, and there’s really nothing you can do about it.

One of the most common times for a woman in labor to have an accident is when she’s getting an epidural. It’s common to pee during the epidural process. Your anesthesiologist has likely seen this many times before, and you needn’t be embarrassed by the fact.

Having a bowel movement is also common during labor. Some women will have multiple bowel movements during labor. Here again, your medical providers have had this happen plenty of times before and, while it can be embarrassing, you needn’t worry.

Gas is another common side effect of labor and delivery. You’re likely to have gas when you are pushing. Again, the nurses and doctors have seen this happen plenty of times. If, however, you’ve never passed gas in front of your husband, he might get a chuckle out of the whole thing. Don’t forget that men think gas is funny, so it’s not like you’d be passing gas in front of a business meeting.

Vomiting is common, as well during labor and delivery. Don’t be surprised if it turns into so-called “projectile vomiting.”
