5 Things You are Paying for that You Don’t Need

We all spend more money than we have to and it is always on things we don’t actually need. Of course, they are things that we like and that might improve the quality of life somewhat. However, there are replacements for all of the following things you pay for that are either free or already meet your needs in some way. You might balk at cutting out some of these services from your life, but when it frees up a couple hundred dollars a month that you could use to get out of debt, pay off your mortgage, and the like, then you might not think it’s such a bad idea!

#1 Cable/Satellite

There are free television channels that you can receive. There aren’t many, but you should be able to pick up four to six channels, maybe more, without having to pay a single cent for the service. You may enjoy the wide variety of programming you get with cable or satellite service, but is it worth what you pay each month? Not to mention, if you didn’t have TV you would probably get outside more, exercise, and be in better shape. This would result in you being healthier and saving even more money on health insurance, doctors visits, and the like. So, think about cutting out satellite or cable or at least paying for only the very basic plan. It really is a big money saver.

#2 Home Phone

Do you have cell phones? Most people do and usually each member of the family has a cell phone. So, why do you need a home phone, too? If you are worried about 911 then pay for only the very basic service. However, most people find they are able to live happily with just their cell phone and they are able to save money!

#3 Movie Rental Service

Do you have a movie rental service you pay for each month? If so, you are probably paying more than you would if you were actually renting movies. You may be paying $20 a month for an unlimited plan and only end up renting two or three movies a month. That’s close to $7 per rental! Consider the cheapest rental plan, which is usually about $5 per month, or skip the movie rentals altogether. Save the money or rent from places like Red Box that costs $1 per rental.

#4 Gym Membership

Do you actually go to the gym? If you are like many people with gym memberships you don’t, which means you are wasting your money. On the other hand, if you do go to the gym and need to save money then you can find other activities to do that will burn calories and build muscle without costing a fortune.

#5 Low Deductible Health Insurance

If you are a healthy individual then you don’t need a low deductible health insurance plan. Instead, increase the deductible and pay significantly less per month. You will save a lot of money!
